There is evidence of an Iron Age settlement within the Penzance boundaries and it can be found at a number of sites though the best and most famous of all of these is Lescudjak Castle. The history of this entire area (from Penzance to Lands End) goes back to the Stone Age. Evidence suggests that this area was probably widely settled even during the Neolithic and Bronze periods. All over the moorland, pre-historic villages have been explored and excavated and is open to the public.
Lescudjak Castle (a huge Iron Age castle) is situated on the summit of a hillside, and it is the oldest building that is still standing in Penzance. Although the building is now decrepit (weathering nearly 1,000 years), it is obvious from its structure that it was very difficult to build and almost impossible to attack.
