It's definitely worth a visit, for families or museum fans.
The location of this museum is unusual in that it is located in one of the United Kingdom's preserved Victorian herring curing facilities in Great Yarmouth. The museum takes visitors on an interesting journey back in time as it explains the large fishing and maritime heritage to be found about a town on the eastern coast of England. The Time and Tide Museum of Great Yarmouth Life was a 'Gulbenkian Museum of the Year' finalist in 2005 and won the European Museum of the Year, Objective 2 Celebrate Award Winner (Tourism Category) and was the Eastern Daily Press Design & Development Award Winner in 2006.
The museum is open all year round because of its popularity and the public interest in learning about the history of the town in all of its aspects. Visitors to the museum can walk through an authentic, Victorian 'row' (cottages) and see how the fishermen of the time lived. They can also experience the quayside as it was in the 1950's, listen to tales of shipwrecks and rescue on the sea, and learn how to 'drive' a coastal Drifter. The museum's garden is filled with sails and herring fishing boats and there are hands-on displays, puzzles, audio guides and other family oriented activities that pertain to Great Yarmouth.
The 'Shipwreck - For Those in Peril' exhibition is new to the museum and it explores how the residents of England's eastern coast have dealt with the waters of the North Sea over the centuries. Personal stories, artefacts, and art work have all been gathered from the many Norfolk County Museums to put together this collection that reveal how people have braved the sea to rescue their fellow sailors, the tools of the trade, and the many tragedies that happened over the years.
