Effective speaker maintain more eye contact than ineffective one. This does not mean you want to engage in a staring contest. In conversation maintain eye contact about 50 to 60 percent of the time when you are speaking and 5 to 85 percent of the time when you are listening. In a group presentation of course you need to maintain eye contact almost 100 percent of the time.
You cannot achieve good eye contact in a group presentation if you are reading your notes word for word, your audience sees a view of the top of your head instead. Most people cannot achieve good eye contact if they try to memorize every single speech either usually memorizers get a glazed, vacant look in their eyes. You cannot fake eye contact by looking at the middle of the back of the room or by using the lighthouse scan back and forth across the room.
Instead good eye contact means establishing human contact with actual people in your audience. You might try for starters looking at the friendly faces, their nodding and smiling will encourage you. Eventfully however you should look at everyone especially the key decision maker in the group. Establish momentary human contact with each person.
