It is popularly believed that Soap (1977-1981) was the first television show to have explicit references to the sexual preferences of people, especially homosexuals. But two other shows that were launched in the early and mid-1970's, namely The Corner Bar in 1972 and The Nancy Walker Show in 1976, had gay characters in their casts. But Soap is by far the most popular and most controversial show that had an actor playing the part of a homosexual. Considered one of the legends of the romantic comedy genre, Billy Crystal (born on March 14, 1947 at Long Beach, New York), the noted Hollywood actor and comedian, who has had such hits as When Harry Met Sally, is one of the first actors to appear as a gay man in a television sitcom. He played a character named Jodie Dallas in Soap.
