My Dog Chews His Feet And Ankle Area Constantly. What Can I Do To Stop This?

Answer Question

How to treat this will depend on the cause.  Your dog may simply have a 'hot spot' which could be caused by skin irritation (fleas, other insect bite, or food allergies if the food was recently changed).  Sometimes when they lick and chew at it it causes the itching to become chronic, causing the 'hot spot'.  I've found that bathing every other day with an oatmeal based dog shampoo helps this go away in about 1-2 weeks (licking will diminish slowly over this time).

It could also be a 'nervous habit' that some dogs develop due to anxiety or other stress feelings.  If this is found to be the cause medication prescribed by a vet usually resolves it.  (this was the case with my pug who chewed his back legs)
