Well, I'm not too sure about Badminton, but in baseball I know that they also use the term "rubber game", which refers to the third game that is played in a 3 game series after the first two games have been won one a piece (I'm guessing it's the same in Badminton).

As to it's origin, as far as I know it comes from the card game "Bridge", where when you play a third game after each player has won one each from the first two games, they call it the "rubber game".

The other origin is believed to be from the English game of bowls.
