Knowledge is the noun of the verb 'to know', which comes from the old Norse kna and the Latin gnoscere/Greek gignoskein. It means the state of being aware of, acquainted with or familiar with something. It's also often used to mean practical ability/skill (eg knowledge of a foreign language implies being able to speak it). A knowledgeable person is one with a high level of information on a subject, or a deep understanding of it. An example of this is the fact that LOndon taxi drivers have to take  a test to get their licences, on all the London streets, landmarks etc - this is called 'The Knowledge.'
