How Can I Get To Oradea And Where Can I Find Accommodation?

Answer Question

It is relatively easy to access Oradea by train, from either within Romania, or from Hungary. It is best to travel from Cluj-Napoca (Kolozsvár), the largest city in Transylvania, as it is only about 2 hours by train. If you are arriving from Bucharest, you should get ready for a long, 10 hour trip. There is also a daily train from Budapest (Hungary), which takes about 5 hours.  If you are travelling by car, you will find that Romania's roads have improved, but they are still of far poorer quality than those in most parts of Europe. It takes approximately 15 minutes to get from the Ártánd/Bors border crossing between Romania and Hungary to Oradea's city centre. If you are interested in travelling by air, there are daily, direct flights from Bucharest, on board TAROM, Romania's flag carrier.

There are only a small handful of hotels in Oradea, although the situation has improved since the early 1990s, when the Hotel Dacia was the only place with reasonable standards. The Hotel Dacia, a three-star establishment, is still the best-known hotel in the city. Single rooms start at about €62.

The Hotel Vulturul Negru is also a possibility and it is now considered a four star establishment. This may be very surprising to anyone who stayed at this hotel during the 1990s--probably before extensive renovations--when it was very much sub-standard, even from an East European perspective. The nightly rate now stands at €68 per person.
