Could be the catalytic converter is clogged.
Sometimes you can actually smell a rotten egg smell when it is clogged.
Once your car has heated up, look underneath it at the back of the engine where the exhaust attaches and see if the C converter is glowing red. If it is, then it is clogged.
This would cause your car to become sluggish, hesitate and shut off sometimes.
You didn't say what kind of car you have or the year, but it might also have clogged fuel injectors and/or fuel filter.
You can buy a fuel treatment to put in your gas tank which might help, but i would check the fuel filter for sure.
