Answer Question

Bass Strait is a sea strait that separates Tasmania from the south of the Australian mainland. It is around 240 km wide at its narrowest point and approximately 50 metres deep. It comprises of over 50 islands of which the King islands and Flinders Island are the most important. The other islands located here are Three Hummock Island, Robbins Island, Hunter Islands, Cape Barren Islands, Clark Island, Deal Island, Hogan Island, Curtis Island, to name a few.

This Strait was first founded by Matthew Flinders, in the year 1798. He named it after his ship's doctor George Bass. However, if traced down into history this place is known for many ships to have been drowned here. It was only in 1848 that a lighthouse was erected on the deal islands. This protected ships on the eastern strait.
