How Are Elements Different?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The smallest unit of an element is known as an atom. Atom consists of three sub-atomic particles including neutron, proton and electron. Elements are different from each other due to the difference in number of sub-atomic particles. The chemical properties of an element depends upon the number of electrons present in an atom. For example, hydrogen has one electron and oxygen atom has 16 electrons. So, hydrogen atom loses one electron to make bonds and oxygen atom gains two electrons to make bonds with other atoms.
