I'm Starting Work As An Examiner. How Do I Cope With The Workload?

Answer Question

It's always a shock, even for experienced examiners, to see just how many scripts you have to mark and how serious the deadlines are. Do remember, though, that it gets easier as time passes. Whatever you do, don't rush the first ten or so scripts – these will probably be scrutinised by the Senior Examiner, and they are your chance to find out exactly how the marking process works. Once you're confident that you know the marking scheme, you will speed up naturally, but it's still a slow process. It's easier to handle if you set aside specific blocks of time each day, the longer the better – one long stint will be more productive than three short ones, because it usually takes a while to get back into the rhythm of marking. Even if you fall behind, it's not a good idea to mark all through the night – you will probably make mistakes and end up changing them next day. If you do need an extension or can't manage your quota, try to inform the exam board as early as possible, and don't be afraid to ask for help or guidance.
