The Quiet revolution as said to be an era of rapid changes that took place in Quebec during the 1960's. The French for the revolution was 'Révolution tranquille'. Although not many people are aware of when this quiet revolution really began, some think it to be a direct result of the changes that came in with Jean Lesage's reforms after he won the provincial election in 1960. It is said to have gone on for the next ten years and finally concluded with the October Crisis. Events like the Asbestos Miners Strike in 1949, the Auromatistes signing of the 'Refus Global', the Maurice Richard Riot that took place in 1995 and other events that ridiculed the power of the Roman Catholic Church are believed to be some reasons for the start of this quiet revolution. A number of heavy steps were taken during this era such as high investments made in the education sector, the civil service being unionized, a new Ministry of Education etc. Some of the most important effects of these new changes were the creation of a welfare state (État-Providence), the secularization of society and the creation of a new national identity for all those living in the province.
