Which Wilkie Collins Novel Features A Detective Called Sergeant Cuff?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

In the novel of that name, the "Moonstone" is a huge yellow diamond, stolen from and Indian shrine and given as an 18th birthday present to a girl called Rachel Verrinder. When it disappears on the same day, several people in the large house are under suspicion including some of the servants and even Rachel herself. Sergeant Cuff, one of the earliest detectives in fiction, is called in to find the thief. The story is mainly told by the house steward, Gabriel Betteridge, although, in a typical Collins technique, the story is also told from other points of view. Betteredge tries to help Cuff in his investigation, which is made more complicated by Rachel's suspicious behaviour and the suicide of a housemaid, Rosanna. In the end it turns out that Rachel's beloved cousin took the diamond while sleepwalking; Rachel saw this, which explains her secretive behaviour. However, the real thief is not Franklin (the cousin) but Rachel's other suitor, who took it from him and used it to implicate him. Finally the diamond is returned to the Indian shrine.
