Charles Robert Darwin was born in Shrewsbury on the 12th of February, 1809. He is best known for his theory that all life evolves from common ancestors (for example, monkey to man) through a process of natural selection or in other words, survival of the fittest. This became the basis of modern evolutionary theory, as it offers a logical explanation for the diversity of life on our planet.

Darwin initially studied Medicine at Edinburgh University before studying divinity at Cambridge. In 1838 during his five year voyage on the HMS Beagle, Darwin was intrigued by the distribution of the planet's species and fossils. Upon observing different species of finch in the Galapagos Islands, he discovered that each island supported a type of the bird that was closely related to the others but differed significantly. Thus he formed his theory that the better a species is suited to its surroundings, the more likely it is to survive and reproduce. The voyage established Darwin as a prominent geologist and his book The Voyage of the Beagle made him a reputable author.

In 1859, Darwin published his theories in his book On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection. At the time, Darwin's theories were considered to be radical as most Europeans still believed in the Creationist idea that the world was created in seven days, and the idea that mankind may have evolved from apes caused a considerable amount of controversy. Darwin later published The Descent of Man and Selection in Relation to Sex in which he discussed the evolution of mankind and sexual selection. He continued to publish his theories throughout his life until he died on the 19th of April, 1882. Other works of note include The Expression of Emotion in Man and Animals, The Power of Movement in Plants and his final work The Formation of Vegetable Mould Through the Action of Worms. Charles Darwin was buried in Westminster Abbey close to Sir Isaac Newton.

Darwin's theory of evolution is still rejected by many Creationists; however it provides the most logical explanation for the diversity of life, and has long been accepted as fact by the scientific community.
