Different Graphics cards cater to different users. The quality of graphics cards necessary is also dependent on the user. The top performance cards are requirements of high end gamers. Without a high end card, gamers will not be able to enjoy the full effects of the gaming program. On the other hand, if you are a graphics professional like one who works with Adobe's Photo-shop and Illustrator, you really wont need the very top end card as those modern day graphics card are catering more towards processing 3D visuals at very high speeds. An average card will do the job, and will probably cost less than $100.
The main idea is to choose a card that will keep some of the load away from the computer's core processing power which will not affect the speed of the computer. If your computer has two ports for two different cards, it is probably advisable to get two different cards. Many people share the opinion that having two cards is better than having one.
Today there are many companies selling graphics cards. However, most of them license the technology from leading manufacturers such as ATI and Nvidia. The Radeon series are made by ATI and Nvidia is the maker of the GeForce line. ATI or Nvidia don't sell the cards directly in the market but there are other firms such as Asus, Abit, GeCube and Sapphire who sell them with some little variations on the core technology.
