St Kilda is in Scotland. It is an archipelago i.e. a cluster of islands in the North Atlantic ocean. It is owned by the National Trust for Scotland. It is listed under World Heritage site. The total land area of St Kilda is 225 km². It is one of the four world heritage sites in Scotland. St Kilda means shields. It is derived from a Norse word "skildir".
These islands were formed as a result of a massive volcano explosion. The largest island in this group is named as Hirta. Dun, Levinish, Stac Lee and Stac an Armin etc are some of the smaller islands in the archipelago. It has spectacular sea cliffs. It has been populated since primitive times but after 1930 saw the migration of the residents in St Kilda it is uninhabited.
