this site has basic information and a graphic explaining a silkworm

They take between 7-10 days to hatch, turning a shade of gray just hours before hatching. They eat mulberry leaves for 4-6 weeks until it is 2 3/4 inches long. It will molt its skin and pupate, spinning a white silk cocoon around itself. This process can take 3 days. After 3 weeks it emerges as a white moth which cannot fly. It reproduces and dies after about 5 days, with the female laying between 200-500 eggs that are light yellow, and later turn gray before starting the cycle over again.
