You have asked for a very tricky question as if the oil companies know of the area where they can drill for oil, certainly they will pay a hefty price to just get hold of the area, as at least in that case they do not have to  make investment in the drilling aspect of the oil exploration.
      
But if we talk of some of the areas in general where it is a good prospect to invest for the drilling of oil, there are numerous kinds of areas that can be chosen. If you want to explore oil in the sea, you should look for the area which can be called low lying as it is expected that oil may shift towards that area and you might have better prospects  there. If you are in the US, the area that I would like to suggest is the state of Texas as history has proven that the state has immense reserves of oil.
