Answer Question

Yes, they can get a blood transfusion from any blood type, including A. You know, at one point blood type O was once called the universal donor because of this.

Actually they can't. Type O blood can only receive O blood. Type O- is the universal donor. O+ is not the universal receiver. Type O+ can only receive type O+ or O-.

For donation of blood, first thing taken in to consideration is RH factor. This can be either negative or positive. A Positive RH factor can donate blood to positive RH factor and negative RH factor to negative RH factor only. Secondly, blood type O is universal donor which means blood type O can be given to any other blood type with same RH factors. This type of blood, can receive blood from only blood type O and none of other blood types can donate to O.

If your friend has a blood type O+ then only O+ blood can be given. A+ can not donate blood to O+.

Blood group O is universal donor. O+ will not contain any antigens whereas it contains the antibodies A and B. The antibodies and antigens in my blood type A+ is different.
A+ blood type contains antigen A and antibody B. If a blood transfusion occurs by any chance, the antigen A will react with the antibody A in blood type O+ causing the red blood cells to clump together. Which may result in death.
Blood transfusion of the Blood types are as follows:
O+ can be given to patients with type O+, A+, B+, AB+ and can receive type O+, O-.
A+ can be given to patients with type A+, AB+ and can receive type O+, A+, O-, A-.
B+ can be given to patients with type B+, AB+ and can receive type O+, B+, O-, B-.
        AB+ can be given to patients with type AB+ and can receive type O+, A+, B+, AB+, O-, A-, B-, AB-
        O- can be given to patients with type O+, A+, B+, AB+, O-, A-, B-, AB- and can receive type O-
A- can be given to patients with type A+, AB+, A-, AB- and can receive type O-, A-
B- can be given to patients with type B+, AB+, B-, AB- and can receive type O-, B-
AB- can be given to patients with type AB+, AB- and can receive type O-, A-, B-, AB-
