Is A Degree In Philosophy Of Any Practical Application?

A  degree in philosophy can be a very positive asset in your life.

Many employers would consider the qualification because having any degree has already trained you to a level of some organisation and disaplin in your work.
Some people say that studying philosophy can alter their whole perception on life. Philosophy can make you change alot of previously help views and beliefs. Religious philosophy can do this. Some students of Religious philosopht say that they have had their religious beliefs shattered, whist others argue that they have been strengthened.

Philosophy can help you to question and analyse and hopefully see many sides to an arguement which is helpful in working life.
As a former student of philosophy I would say that the skills aquired through this subject have been a great asset in personal and career development.

It is true that some people tend to view a degree in philosophy as being of no use, regarding it as navel gazing at best and a complete waste of time at worst.  However, this can be a short sighted view.
Philosophy is concerned with more than unanswerable questions such as 'Why are we here'? or 'What is the meaning of Life'?.  It is also concerned with issues such as the capacity to examine arguments and spot any fallacies or mistakes in logic.  
A degree in  philosophy will also help you to be able to present arguments in a clear, reasoned fashion and examine data critically.  In short, it can help develop critical reasoning skills, which are important aspects within the workplace.
Bear in mind though, that many employers may take the view that it is of little practical value, so if you do study philosophy, when applying for jobs try to actively demonstrate how your degree is indeed an asset rather than just being 'airy fairy'.
