The military ruler who famously called $400 million offered by Jimmy Carter towards the insurgency in Afghanistan as nothing but peanuts was General Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq. He took control of Pakistan in a bloodless coup, ousted the popular Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, had him tried and hanged for the murder of another politician. Zia-ul-Haq also radicalized the state of Pakistan and took it closer to fundamentalism. Some of his policies gave rise to fundamental militant parties that are today listed as terrorist groups including the Sipah-e-Sahaba which surfaced in response to the revolution in Iran. He amassed a personal fortune in excess of $200 million and owned a ranch covering 20,000 acres in the United States. On the 17th of August 1988 when news of his death was confirmed there were celebrations across Pakistan. He died in a plane accident and it is still speculated that the KGB, Mossad or the CIA either individually or acting together had him assassinated.
