A Steeplechase.
Originally these races were run across country from one village to the next over any obstacles that happened to be in the way, hedges, rivers etc.
The most famous Steeplechase run today is The Grand National at Aintree, Liverpool run over 4 and a half mile and 32 fences of varying height and difficulty.
