Do not wash your cat once a week. Shampoos & soaps can dry out their skin and make it flakey.
For the most part, they do indeed keep themselves very clean by licking. If your cat happens to lick you, you will notice how rough the tongue is. Their tongue helps to remove dirt, dander, and all other stuff from their coat. If you decide you do want to bathe your cat, here are some tips. I used to bathe my first cat with flea shampoo every other month until I started using Frontline.....so I've learned how to give cat baths the hardest way possible---by experience and trial & error!
1) Do it in the sink if possible - This makes it easier for you to hold onto the kitty, as they are at the same level as you are. In the tub, you must be on your knees, stooped over usually, and it is very hard to bathe and hold onto the cat.
2) Wear old clothes - For one, if your kitty hates it and splashes or thrashes about, you will be covered in water and soap. For two, if your kitty has all of it's claws, you may end up with some tiny holes. I have a couple of old T-shirts like this....LOL
3) Use utility gloves if you have them - I mean the ones that cover your wrists, and I've seen some that even go up your forearm. They are made for household chores, etc and usually come 1 or 2 to a pack. Trust me, if your kitty still has claws, this will save your arms/wrists/hands from being scratched.
4) As the person above mentioned, use a water pitcher to pour LUKE WARM water over your cat. Don't spray or stick the cat under the faucet----it WILL freak out LOL Don't use water the is too hot or cold--you don't want to scald him! Test the water like you would a baby bottle or bath---
5) Shut the bathroom door and cover the floor with towels - Your cat may escape from you during the bath and they are very SLIPPERY! Actually the chances of this is very high LOL Closing the door confines the cat so you can catch him easier, and the towels will help keep the floor from getting slippery wet.
6) Have several towels ready and waiting - You will need to dry your cat off as much as possible. I used to spoil mine by having one tumbling in the dryer, so that after I dried them with one towel, I wrapped them in the warm one from the dryer :)
Some cats tolerate being dried with a blow dryer, but mine did not. It terrified him, so I don't recommend it.
7) As always, it's best to have a second person helping you. Just be careful not to squeeze them too tightly because this can really hurt them. And as someone else has mentioned, don't get soap in their eyes or nose.
8) Have the temperature in the house fairly warm so the cat doesn't freeze afterwards!
Acutally unless your cat is just really dirty, what I really recommend is using waterless shampoo or wet pet wipes (made just for pets).
One that I really like is "FURminator Waterless deShedding Shampoo & Conditioner for Cats".
It comes in a spray bottle and you just saturate a washcloth or paper towel with it and run it over your cats fur. Let it dry and brush the coat and Voila! You have a kitty that smells absolutely wonderful!
Then again, you also have the option of taking it to a Groomer. You will have to call around probably, because not all Pet Groomer's do cats. It costs about $50+, so it is the more expensive route.
Anyway, as a cat lover and happy owner of 4 cats, I wish you the best of luck with your cat bath!

Cat generally keeps it clean, and so should not be bathed every time. But keeping your pet fresh and lovely is necessary. There,I want to tell you some things what you should regard.First, you should decide whether your cat need a bathing necessarily.Second, you have better wear appropriate clothing. It is clever to wear clothing that isn't new.Because it is important to be safe from any possible scratches.Third,if your cat is rather termagant and can kick your hands, get at least two people to wash your cat.At last,be sure to not get soap bubble in their eyes, nose, mouth,or ears.

Put them in a small tub and use a pitcher full of water to wash and rinse her. Do not place her in a big tub and use the sprayer- that will scare her and she might claw. And have help
