The benefits of a mutual fund are, that they are more secure than investing in direct shares in a single company, because your risks are more spread due to the structure of the fund. What this means however, is, that if you lower your risk you also lower your return, since taking a risk on a relatively
unknown share can often bring good returns,or conversely, loose you all your money.
This way with a Mutual fund, the diversification inherent in it ensures a smoother ride, with out the bumps and highs and lows. It is a medium risk type of investment, not high risk, and also not as safe as a fixed term deposit in a bank, but a compromise between the two.
