What Is The Real Name Of George Eliot?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

George Eliot was actually the 'nom de plume' of a woman called MARY ANN EVANS. It's believed she used it because book publishers of the 19th century were unlikely to view a woman's work (other than romances) with the same gravitas as that of a man. There is also the possibility that she wished to protect her true identity to avoid any scandal arising from a relationship she was having with a married man.
