What Is The Meaning Of Abbreviation?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Abbreviation is the shortened form of a phrase or a sentence and is used to imply the whole. The word abbreviation came from Latin, where 'brevis' implies 'short'. It is at the end of 19th century when the abbreviation was begun in use and since then it is quite prevalent even today. Abbreviation is used to reduce the time required for writing or speaking, especially when referring to the myriad new organization, bureaucratic entities and technological products typical of industrial societies. It is very wonder to say that an abbreviated word can now even be considered as a whole of the word, either as an initials in which the letters are pronounced individually such TV instead of television or as an acronym in which letters are combined into syllables such as NASA, NAFTA for example. According to British Encyclopaedia published in 1911, D.S.W implies Doctor of Social Work; F.M is Field Marshal; F.R.C.S is Fellow of Royal College of Surgeons.
