An ice hotel is a hotel that is built from solid blocks of ice using sculpting and chiseling techniques much the same way a stone sculpture is carved; snow is also used extensively in the building process. Ice hotels are made in winter in some of the coldest regions on Earth; the hotels are built anew each year as they melt during the summer. These hotels are favorite spots of those in search of a novel tourist experience where along with the ice and snow guests are treated to a whole arctic experience replete with ice sculptures, skating and themes like Vikings and fairy tales.

Some of the countries in which these hotels are found are Canada, Finland, Norway and Sweden; the ice hotel located at Jukkasjarvi is the most famous, built over an area of about 30,000 sq ft. Other famous ice hotels include the one built at Quebec City, Canada that includes an art gallery of ice sculptures as well as a wedding chapel, the Mammut Snow Hotel in Finland and The Alto Igloo ice hotel in Norway.
