When a country is a colony to another, all its resources, labor and markets are under the direct control of the colonizing nation. There may also be other impositions by the colonizing nation like those related to society, culture, religion language etc depending upon the objectives for the colonization. In short, there is complete hegemony and intervention and the people of the country do not have any say in any of the matters related to their country. Britain had 13 colonies in North America before the American Revolution which later on became the three sates. The revolution took place when the people rebelled against the British rule. After the revolution, there were many social shifts and many new leaders arose. Republican leaders took hold of the people and there was also insistence on the fact that the people should be able to choose their official government leaders which resulted in those previous colonies and the other United states becoming democratic.
