The Welsh surnames which have evolved into surnmanes tend to come from forenames, including those of leaders and princes.
Dfydd, Gruffydd, Llywelyn, Madog, Morgan, Owain and Rhys are names can be assigned to the period of high status Welsh leaders and Princes.
Less common are these:-
Anarawd, Bleddyn ( now often spelt Blythin around Flintshire), Cadfael, Cydifor, Cynfyn, Elystan, Idnerth, Iestyn ( Iystyn), Nefydd, Peredur, Selyf, Tudwal, Tyfid and Ynyr. Few of these are surnames now and are rare as such.
Names which formed personal names in the thirteenth century are :-
Cedifor, Cynddelw, Cynwric, Ednowain, Ednyfed, Einion, Gronow ( a Border Name), Gwion,Heilyn, Iorwerth, Ithel, Ifor ( Ivor) Madyn, Rhirid, Tegwared, Tudur( Tudor),
The most famous of these is Tudur or Tudor - which was carried from the Isle of Anglesey to become the name of a Royal Dynasty with the succession of Henry Tudor ( Henry VII) to the throne.
It should be remembered that many older names have changed over time.
