When Was Bitnet Founded?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Bitnet was founded in the year 1981. It was one of the first co-operative US University networks established under the aegis of Ira Fuchs at the City University of New York and Greydon Freeman at Yale University. The initial network link was developed between CUNY and Yale.

If you go to see according to technical terms, BITNET was different from internet as it was more of a point-to-point "store and forward" network.

The full form of BITNET was "Because It's Time Network", though the initial meaning was "Because It's There Network". BITNET links initially ran at 9600 baud. They were also used as a huge internal network by IBM and it was bigger than quiet a few networks like ARPAnet.

In 1991 BITNET spread over five hundred organizations and around three thousand nodes in all educational foundations.
