Claudius is a name and refers to the fourth Roman Emperor. His original name was Tiberius Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus and belonged to the Julio- Claudian Dynasty. He was born on August 1, 10 BC. He was the first Roman Emperor who was born outside Italy. His birth place is Lugdunum in Gaul. Today, this place is known as Lyon and is in France. Claudius was born to Drusus and Antonia Minor. After his accession assumed the name Tiberius Claudius Drusus Nero Germanicus.
Claudius was not considered fit to become a Roman Emperor. He suffered from some kind of disability. He stammered and also had a club foot. Caligula, his nephew was murdered in the year 41 BC. He was known as a weak man, but his victories prove the converse. He conquered and colonized Britain and also improved the civil administration of Rome. Robert Graves, a famous historian published a book, Claudius in 1934.
