If you applied for a position in the same occupational field or in the discipline you studied or one that matches your skills or the position is similar to what you have already done - then the answer to this interview question is relatively straight forward.
Interview answer: 'I applied for this job since it matches my skills and abilities, my previous experience and positions I filled successfully. I feel that this position will enable me to demonstrate my abilities and skills and make a contribution in an area I have studied in and see my future career in.'
If the job you applied for does not coincide with the jobs you did previously you must try and find those same areas that have common ground.
For example, if you applied for a job as an Analyst in an Investment Bank and you worked in Sales before you may answer:
'In my previous position in Sales I found that I was most interested in the economical aspects and financial models at work and so I decided to shift my career into that area'.
Or alternatively: 'I have recently completed my studies in Economics and I am seeking a position that is within this discipline'.
Occasionally, the interviewer may probe further and ask - 'why did you chose to apply for a job with our firm?'
If the company you are applying for is a large firm then you can reply - 'I wanted to be part of a large organisation - one of the leading corporates in the market'.
Or alternatively: 'your company has a reputation of recruiting the finest professionals and a strong management team and I would find it challenging to work in such an environment'.
You could always say that the 'position seems interesting and challenging and you look forward to making progress in your career in that direction.'
