When Was Lilac Introduced?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Lilac and roses are considered the two most beautiful flowers. There is no official date as to when lilac was introduced but their origin first dates back to the mid fifties of seventeenth century in the USA. They were first grown in the botanical gardens in America and were also widely famous in New England. Rochester, New York is considered as the "World Capital" of lilac. In fact the love for lilac bushed in Rochester dates back to 1892 when horticulturist names John Dunbar planted at least twenty varieties of the Lilac bush.

There are at least 1000 varieties of the lilac bush, and they are available in various colors, the most famous being lilac (color) and purple, although white and pink are equally popular. Lilacs originated from Europe and Asia but gained popularity in America and now grow abundantly there.
