Is It Safe In Auckland?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Auckland, New Zealand is a relatively safe city. Crime rates have largely remained unchanged over the years, and have dropped slightly since a peak during the mid-1990s. According to a study conducted by Auckland's local government, 68.92% of all crimes relate to dishonesty and are, therefore, generally non-violent in nature. Only about 8% of all crimes committed in the city were of a violent nature including bodily harm to the victim, while over 8% took the form of "property abuses." In 2002, just over 13% of all crimes committed in New Zealand took place in Auckland.

Despite the relatively low crime rate and an overall decrease, or stagnation in criminal activity, there has been a gradual rise in violent crimes between 2000 and 2003. Prostitution is also an increasing problem in some areas of the inner city, as well as alcohol and drug abuse, and pick-pocketing in some neighbourhoods.
