The Glen of Imaal terrier was probably first bred in the 16th and 17th centuries by farmers who were desendants of the Lowland and Hessian soldiers. These soldiers were given a plot of land each and had to earn their living from working in rocky, unfriendly terrain. The Glen of Imaal terrier is an Irish breed of dog named after the Glen of Imaal area in the county of Wicklow in Ireland.

Glen of Imaal terriers were one of those hardy breeds of dogs that proved to be loyal companions to these Irish soldiers-turned-farmers and were able to adapt to the tough and hostile environment that prevailed in the rocks. Glen of Imaal terriers are short dogs with shorter legs than the others breeds of Irish terriers. This helps them to do what they were originally trained to do–accompany their masters on their hunting expeditions and hunt for other animals, such as foxes, badgers, rats, etc.
