Why Do People NOT Die From The Flu Now? Years Ago They Did.

I realize we have vaccines available now, but even if you don't get vaccinated against the flu, you just get sick for a while but that's all. And there are so many different strains, you can't vaccinate against them all. So I don't understand, why do people just get sick now, when they used to die from it years ago?

Just this week we had a young child die of the flu here in Texas...prior to that there was a man that died and they attributed his death  to the flu just within the past few weeks.  So, people still do die from the flu.  I will say that not as many die now as have in the past years which can be attributed (I assume) to better medical care, early intervention and, of course, the flu shots.   But, deaths do still occur.  It is not too late this year to get your flu shot, if you have not done so.  The flu season runs for a few more months yet.

Fate sometimes steps in and throws a curve ball at you. Since I wrote the answer above, I have been diagnosed with the flu...and it is not fun! I had the flu shot some months ago. That shot, according to my Dr., was for the type A strain. I have the type B strain. So, even though I was protected from one type of flu, I was not protected from the other. I do highly recommend that everyone get the flu shot as early as it is offered each year. ; You do not want the flu..trust me!

Death due to influenza has primarily to do with the strain of flu that a person gets.  In the past strains such as the Spanish flu in the early 20th century took a devastating toll on human life because we had no immunity to the new strain when it hit the population.  Because influenza is such an easy virus to pass on to others its viability as a cause for global pandemic is much greater than most other potentially deadly diseases.  While deaths from flu do occur still they are typically associated with the elderly or very young, due to their inability to fight the disease.  When new strains of the virus emerge, however, the population most affected is young healthy individuals.  By many accounts we are currently past due for a major pandemic flu.  Which is why the CDC and world health organization monitors new strains of influenza so closely.
