Last night, whilst watching the England game, the English fans were violently aggressive, booing, shouting and singing 'you're all a load of rubbish' and 'what a load of rubbish' at the players. They were also singing 'You're getting sacked in the morning' to the manager Steve McClaren.
The reason is that the England players had not scored a goal in competitive football for four games. They were essentially playing badly and as Nelson once said 'England expects... (each man to do his duty).
The English have always believed that England should be the best team in the world, some people feel its arrogance, but we invented the game and the fans expect that with the quality of player and the amount that they are paid, they should be producing results.
After Steve McClaren took over as manager from Sven Goran Eriksen, people thought things would get better, but they really haven't.

The English fans who were booing the England team had every right to do so. As a rule the average Englishmen (and I include myself in this), just wants to see the players looking as if they actually want to represent the country.
Also, to bring up something you mentioned epictetus, I don't believe we have any divine right to be the greatest footballing nation on the planet, far from it; until we actually achieve something on the international stage, we will never be able to claim we are close to the worlds best. Having said that, I'm sure there isn't a country in the world who wouldn't love to have the selection problems facing the current English manager.
Potentially we have the finest pool of players in world soccer; getting them to play together is the responsibility of the manager and the players. Whilst they cant achieve that, they will get the reception their performances merit.
As for people thinking it would getter better after Sven left; I have yet to meet a fan who would agree; McClaren was merely fifth or even sixth choice and is clearly massively out of his depth, almost to the point where I could almost feel sorry for him if it wasn't for the couple of million pound a year he currently gets paid!!
