What questions can my current landlord legally answer to a prospective one? What recourse do I have if a landlord's slander keeps me from renting ?
What recourse do I have if my current landlord slanders me, which causes me to be unable to rent elsewhere?

Well, if you're landlord slanders you you can suit on him about defamation. But you can't stop paying your rent because it is not legally right.
