In a computer is the "hard drive" for storage which is a disc spinning being read by an optical laser, it has all your files and the operating system on it that the computer is using as soon as you turn power on to it. External storage "in a computer" can be linked up with a wire / plugged in or direct connection plug without the need for length of a wire like FLASH DRIVES and PORTABLE HARD DRIVES.
