A newborn's diet should ideally consist of mother's milk alone for the first six months. Breastfeeding is advantageous to both the mother and the baby in a number of ways. Breast milk is the perfect food for the digestive system of a baby. Breast milk also contains all the vitamins and the minerals for the growth of the baby. The immature digestive system of a baby digests all the components of breast milk easily.

Breast milk also contains antibodies protecting the infant from a number of diseases. Breastfeeding is also good for moms in burning calories, shrinking uterus and helping them to get into shape faster.

Ideally a 5 week baby should be breastfed every two three hours. A baby should be breastfed at least 10 to 12 times in 24 hours. When your baby hasn't suckled for a period of 3-4 hours, the baby should be woken up and induced to suckle.
