There are around five hundred types of hermit crabs in the world. Most of the species of hermit crabs in the world are aquatic animals. In other words, they live at a range of depths which are slightly off the coasts of shallow coral reefs and shorelines, and the maximum depths at which they are found are at the bottoms of the oceans. However, there are some species of hermit crabs in the world which are terrestrial hermit crabs. In other words, they are predominantly found to be living on the land.

Some of the well-known species of hermit crabs in the world are the coconut crab (which is scientifically known as the Birgus latro), the Halloween hermit crab (which is scientifically known as the Ciliopagurus strigatus), the Coenobita cavipes, the Caribbean hermit crab (which is scientifically known as the Coenobita clypeatus), the Ecuadorian hermit crab (which is scientifically known as the Coenobita compressus), the strawberry land hermit crab (which is scientifically known as the Coenobita perlatus), the Australian land hermit crab (which is scientifically known as the Coenobita variabilis), the Pagurus bernhardus and the flat-clawed hermit crab (which is scientifically known as the Pagurus pollicaris).
