It was argued that the vote would give protection to women against cruel and avaricious husbands. It would be important in improving sexual morality as men and woman should adhere to the same moral principles. It is true to say that the women's movement was as much a moral as a political one.

The vote, it was argued, would give women greater self-reliance and a stronger economic position. It would also be a device to curb unfair legislation against prostitutes, as the causes of this practice were located within the economic and political context of dependency. Most women did not earn enough to support themselves. The Anglo-Saxons saw themselves as superior, so, therefore, how could black slaves have the vote but not white women? Also, many argued that if Britain saw herself as the leader of western civilisation then she ought to send out the right messages, such as equality for women.
