The unicorn, usually depicted as a small white horse with a single, spiral horn in his head, never existed and was always a fictitious creature about which legends grew up.
Some people believe that the legend of the unicrn grew up after people had first seen a rhinoceros.
Legends abounded about the unicorn. It was thought to be a tremendous source of purity and goodness. Legend said that if a unicorn were to stir a pool of dirty water with his horn, it would become pure and good enough to drink. Its horn was supposed to contain an antidote to all poisons and therefore was 'prized'.
However, the unicorn was also reputed to be very strong, so much so that no man could ever capture him, he could only be tamed by a young maiden. Tales then were told of how after luring a unicorn into the woods, using a young girl, hunters would fight for days to try and kill it. But it never actually existed.

Unless you have lived through the entirety of this planet's history, you cannot say that something never existed or happened. All you can say is that there is currently no proof for it. There are many ideas about where stories about creatures with a horn protruding from the centre of their head; it is possible that what we currently envision as a unicorn (horse with horn on head) is due to centuries of translating among different languages. Or it could be that in Mesopotamian art, animals were depicted in profile, and even a two-horned bull would appear to have only one horn. Check out Wikipedia's entry on unicorn for more.
