Seven years is not the statute of limitations for a debt. That is the amount of time a debt can stay on your credit report. They can try to collect as long as the statute of limitations has not run. Statute of Limitations vary by state.

They can try but they can't truly collect. You did not incur the debt with them. They purchased it from your creditor. They only collect through intimidation tactics.

I had a Bank of America Visa from 1989 with my ex and they got a judgement against me and the renewed it ten or twelve years later and then tried to get my bank records and my kids. I had to file bankruptcy to protect myself. I found great advice at a free forum:

I would respond to the complaint. That is the mistake I made that I just ignored it and they did not go away.
