Battle Abbey, aka St. Martins Abbey, is a partly ruined abbey.  It is situated in the diminutive city of Battle, in East Sussex, South East England. The city grew up on the site, which was then upland of the battle of Hastings in1066. The triumphant William the Conqueror built Battle Abbey to celebrate the event.

The Abbey today is converted into an independent girl's school known as Battle Abbey School. However, some of its remains can still be seen. The parts of the building that was built between the 13th and 16th century are standing still at present. These ruins along with an adjoining battlefield attract tourist from far and wide.
In 1070, in the conquest of England, the Normans killed a huge number of people. So, he began to put up an abbey, where the battle of Hastings had taken place, as a penance given by the Pope. However, he died before the abbey could be completed.
