The word redundancy is obtained from redundant. The word redundant has a Latin origin and stems from the word redundans. It is a past participle of the verb redundare which means to overflow. Something that is more than required or normal then it is termed redundant. Such condition of being redundant is called redundancy. The thing which is redundant is also termed redundancy. It is a superfluity.
In language, when linguistic information which is inherent in the composition of the language is repeated it is termed redundancy. For example: mental telepathy or refer back or return back or VAT tax or close proximity are redundancies in language. Wordiness in language or verbosity in speech is termed redundancy. Duplication of electronic equipments is termed redundancy. Diffuseness, diffusion, pleonasm, prolixity, verbiage, wordage, and long-windedness are words that are synonymous to redundancy.
