Richard Evelyn Byrd (1888-1957) was a famous American explorer and Navy official who became the Rear Admiral of the US Navy; Byrd is well known for the several polar expeditions that he undertook to Antarctica which helped in the further exploration of the continent.

Byrd was an excellent aviator and was regarded as an expert of long distance flights over open ocean; he flew in World War I for the US Navy and also was instrumental in the planning of the Navy's transatlantic flights undertaken in 1919.

Byrd's first polar expedition was an attempt to fly over the North Pole; he along with pilot Floyd Bennett claimed to have flown over the North Pole on May 9, 1926 though later analysis of his flight track disproved the feat. Byrd was universally acclaimed for his courage and received the Medal of Honor, the highest military decoration awarded by the United States
