The Griffiths Valuation was a massive undertaking. Richard Griffiths was the man appointed Commissioner of Valuation.
The Tenement Act of 1842 had produced a uniform valuation off all properties in Ireland. This was base on the potential rent of buildings and the productive capacity of land.
richard Griffiths ws a dublin based geologist who undertook this massive survey called the primary Valuation of Ireland, the results of which were produced between 1848 and 1864.
The method of valuation was by barony, civil parish, county, poor-law union and townland.
Every householder and landowner in Ireland was listed making the Griffiths Valuation a very good resource for those researching Iirsh ancestors.
details recoded on the Valuation were;
immediate lessor i.e the name of the person from whom property was leased, acreage, description of the property, name of lessee, and the valuation of the property.
Because census information in Ireland is so poor for the C19 the Valuation is a good, if somewhat limited substitute.
