Who Was Philip Kindred Dick?

PK Dick was an American science fiction writer, active in the middle part of the 20th century.

Nowadays he is probably best known and most associated with his short novel, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, which was made into the movie Blade Runner.

Dick himself died just before Blade Runner came out.  He never experienced literary success in his life time.

Now, though, he is considered one of the most innovative and original writers of his era and his genre. A product of an unstable and insecure childhood, his writings are obsessed with "What is Real?"  And how can anybody truly know what is and isn't real?  In a career spanning 30 years he produced 35 science fiction novels, 12 non-SF novels, and more than a hundred short stories.  

PK Dick did receive some literary recognition in Europe during his lifetime.  In 1966, British SF writer John Brunner called him "The most consistently brilliant SF writer in the world", while Polish author Stanislaw Lem referred to him as "A visionary among charlatans".

Sadly, Dick became addicted to prescription drugs by the end of his life and died in 1983, age 55.
